GMR Airports Limited has unveiled a comprehensive multi-phase modernisation and expansion roadmap for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur. The announcement follows the official handover of approximately 1,000 hectares of land, marking the commercial operations date for GMR to initiate its long-term development plans. The first phase of the eight-year roadmap involves an immediate upgrade of the existing facilities with an initial investment of ₹300 crore. Leveraging the adjacent MIHAN ecosystem, the airport is slated to become a prime logistics gateway with a cargo capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes per annum. Additionally, 100 hectares have been earmarked for an integrated Aerocity to drive regional commercial growth and employment. And given its strategic position at India’s geographical centre, GMR aims to scale the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 3 million to 30 million over a 30-year concession period, with long-term potential reaching 50 million, according to a report.
