India is actively pursuing an ambitious target to scale its air cargo handling capacity to 10 million metric tonnes by 2030, marking a significant leap from the current level of approximately 3.96 million tonnes, said Civil Aviation Minister Mr Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu while speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of a new integrated air cargo hub being developed by Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) at GMR Cargo City, New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. To achieve this substantial growth, the government is placing a sharp strategic focus on expanding air infrastructure and enhancing local transhipment capabilities. Currently, a major portion of India’s international freight relies heavily on foreign carriers and overseas hubs like Dubai and Hong Kong. By modernising
cargo terminals, streamlining regulatory processes, establishing new airport hubs and fostering
public-private partnerships, the country aims to retain more freight handling within its borders, he added, as per a report.
