Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Limited (RGIA) has been honoured with the esteemed titles of “National Energy Leader” and “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” at the 25th National Award Ceremony for ‘Excellence in Energy Management,’ an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on 12th September 2024. This recognition marks a significant achievement for RGIA, as it has received the “National Energy Leader” accolade for the sixth consecutive year and the “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” distinction for the eighth time. These awards underscore the airport’s unwavering commitment to promoting energy efficiency and sustainability within its operations, reflecting its role as a leader in energy management in the aviation sector.
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), managed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd., is known for its sustainable practices and dedication to energy conservation. The airport’s ongoing initiatives to minimize its carbon footprint and enhance energy efficiency through innovative strategies have garnered recognition from industry experts. Over the years, the airport operations have resulted in significant energy savings of around 1.82 million units (MU). RGIA is a proud Carbon Neutral Airport, having received Level 4+ “Neutrality” Accreditation from the Airports Council International as part of its Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

RGIA harnesses the power of green energy through a combination of its own 10 MWp (megawatt peak) solar power plant and green energy supplied by TGSPDCL. Hyderabad Airport has repeatedly shown its dedication to energy efficiency and sustainability. Some of the RGIA’s commitments that help it secure its position as a pioneer in Energy Management include:
- Incorporating green building designs.
- Implementing progressive generation and utilization of renewable energy sources to power airport operations.
- Practising energy management techniques to optimize energy usage and promote conservation.
- Encouraging behavioural changes to foster energy-saving habits.
- Procuring energy-efficient equipment.
The “National Energy Leader” award highlights GHIAL’s leadership in energy management and its commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
