Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi is undergoing a major expansion, with a new terminal and fourth runway set to open in September 2023, according to Mr Rajiv Bansal, the Aviation Secretary, who made the announcement. The addition of the fourth runway will make Delhi the only airport in India with four runways, improving the airport’s capacity to handle more flights. The project is part of Phase III-A of the airport’s expansion plan, which involves an investment of Rs 9,800 crore. The fourth runway, which will be somewhat shorter than the third runway known as 29/11, is anticipated to be about 4,400 metres long and 75 metres wide. This upgrade is expected to significantly reduce flight wait times, facilitating quick aircraft handling, as per a report.
