Logistics service providers asked to prepare for Brexit

Forwarders and hauliers have been urged to start to prepare for Brexit now that they have more clarity on when the transition period will come to an end.

There is limited time now to implement the systems needed to tackle trade friction following the UK government’s recent announcement that import controls would be brought in on European Union (EU) goods at the border from December 31, 2020.

The right software and automation need to be in place to deal with the increased volume of entries that is predicted.

It was also announced that the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) computer system will be extended until 2021, giving more time to prepare for additional changes.

Besides, the right infrastructure needs to be in place for safety and security checks post December 31, 2020, stressed a report.
