Air India and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) have commenced operational trials for international air cargo transhipment, aiming to capture a larger share of the global air freight market. Transhipment—the transfer of goods between different aircraft or carriers at a midway hub for onward journey—is a cornerstone of major global cargo hubs like Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong, but has historically remained modest in India due to procedural and regulatory complexities. The initiative is designed to demonstrate operational and system readiness at Delhi Airport’s cargo facilities. It aligns closely with an upcoming regulatory overhaul by the Indian government intended to ease administrative hurdles for transhipment cargo. Once fully implemented, these policy changes will allow Indian carriers to significantly increase cargo loads, improve belly space utilisation on wide-body aircraft and tap directly into new international trade corridors, effectively diverting cargo traffic that currently transits through foreign hub airports, as per a report.
